5. Toyota Floor Mat
This happened in 2010.
The decade had just started and it broke the worst news for Toyota company. Its floor mats could entangle the gas pedals.
The company had to recall 8.1 million of its cars due to these mats.
To add fuel to the fire was the government’s claim that the deaths of 89 people that happened over the past decade were linked to the unintended rise in the company’s vehicles (with the defective floor mats).
After effect:
Toyota’s recall cost it $2 billion in 2010.
Four years later, it had to shell out $1.2 billion as fine to avoid being prosecuted by the Justice Department for hiding the fact that its floor mats were ill-fitted and had other safety issues.
Since then, the company’s stock market is still recovering.
